Established in 2013, JoyArts Studio focuses on teaching fundamental art principles to students of all ages including: drawing, sketching, character modeling, portrait, etc.The studio also focuses on helping students apply for art high schools and art departments in universities, with examples such as helping students enter the art major of Unionville High, as well as the art department of many universities, such as Sheridan Animation Academy and multiple acclaimed post-secondary programs.
MEET YOUR INSTRUCTORS
ELSIE WANG
Mrs. Elsie graduated from York University with majors in Visual Arts, Art History and Digital Media Arts alongside a Master of Arts, majoring in Art History and Curatorial Practice.
Elsie has been teaching visual arts since 2004 with her first studio "You and Me" located in China. In 2012, she moved back to Canada and founded JoyArts the following year.
HANNAH WANG
Ms. Hannah graduated with a BFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design. She started her journey teaching art at JoyArts in 2021. Her personal work ranges from a variety of mediums including watercolor, gouache, oil paint, coloured pencils, charcoal and oil pastels. She hopes that all her students find joy while pursuing all their personal goals, ambitions and artistic endeavors.
SPECIAL GUEST - NINI
Nini is one of Elsie's many pet birds which often come to studio, she's a gentle African Grey Parrot who loves to watch over students and the students love her too!
CLASSES
DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS
In this class, students are taught the fundamentals of drawing such as shape, measurement, scale, value and perspective. Instructors help students improve on their observational abilities in order to confidently create accurate depictions. Class projects use still life motifs to introduce students to the basic elements of drawing, and develops their awareness of the many factors which go into the creation of a finished drawing.
CREATIVE EXPLORATION
In this fun class, students explore and develop their skills in different artistic forms and media by adding their own personal touches to the artwork. This course focuses on the creative process, idea generation and personal expression.
PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT
Geared towards those looking to apply to high school and university art programs, the portfolio development course aims to help students showcase the best of their skills. Exploratory directions such as sculpture and various means of design will be taught. Students will also learn more about the elements of art and how to utilize the proper skills for their preferred methods of creativity.
WORKSHOPS
WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP
Students learn important watercolour techniques such as wet on wet paint, wet on dry techniques, paintings overworked, and colour theory. The step-by-step lessons begin with getting comfortable with basic tools and encourages the investigation of colour and value strategies as well as taking inspiration from nature and adjusting precedent images for better compositions.
OIL PAINTING WORKSHOP
Taught by Miss Hannah, This workshop is for students who already have a basic understanding of painting and who wish to develop their skills further. Various subject matters will be explored including animals, landscapes, still life and masterpiece precedents. Group critiques will be supplemented by one-on-one instruction
COLOUR PENCIL WORKSHOP
With the help of Prismacolor Premium pencils, students are taught blending techniques which guarantee immediate success in creating realistic drawings. Development of natural colours via techniques such as layering and burnishing is also emphasized in this workshop.
CAMPS
SPRING AND WINTER CAMP
Our March break and winter camp programs are designed to further enhance the creative and interpersonal skills of students. Drawing and painting skills are developed to the student's best potential though creative problem solving, as well as the exploration of both conventional and unconventional approaches to their projects.
OUTDOOR SUMMER CAMP
Every summer students are encouraged to explore the outdoors and participate in live sketching and painting classes held in various parks around Ontario. Students are taught how to quickly capture the spirit and essence of a dynamic landscape or subject while learning about natural light. Field trips to AGO and the Power Plant Gallery are always enjoyed by students and it becomes a fun yet educational experience to see what art has been like through different periods in time.
